Junior Championship 2021 held at Aberdare Golf Club Wednesday July 7th

On a beautiful summer’s day and perfect golfing conditions a small field still found the Aberdare course a tough challenge, with only 2 players managing to break 150 for 2 rounds.

Just 4 shots separated the top 7 players after the morning round with Tom Hedley, Ioan Rowe and Rhys English tied on 73. Jack Reynolds and Joe M Jones were 1 shot behind, Tom Savill 2 behind and Freddy O’Carroll and Paul Reid were the only other players to break 80.

Ioan and Rhys found it tough going in the afternoon and dropped out of contention with Joe and Jack also failing to improve on their morning score.

Freddy O’Carroll recorded a respectable 75 to go with his 77 but things were now coming down to  Tom Hedley and Thomas Savill. An afternoon 73 from Savill for 148 set the target but Tom Hedley was the epitome of consistency and shot another 73, for a respectable 146 winning score.
The other golfers who broke 80 on the day were Owain Williams and William Pontin.

It was great to see so many higher handicap, younger golfers, in the field taking their early steps on the climb to future top competition and, hopefully, success.

Many thanks to the Captain, Committee and Staff of Aberdare Golf Club for such a warm welcome and tremendous help in organising the day. Thanks also to the Glamorgan Committee men who were on duty: Clive, Roger, Dav and Paul who were invaluable to me once more.
