Devon Seniors came to Neath on the back of an unbeaten 2017 season and having beaten Somerset 14-1 in the first game of this season. The Neath golf course was in excellent condition and the weather pleasant but there was a tricky wind to make things interesting. The Glamorgan team contained four new caps in Richard Jones, Kevin Spears, Meurig Phillips and Mike D’Angeli and in the morning foursomes Richard Jones joined fellow Royal Porthcawl member Jeff Thomas to lead the Glamorgan team out in the 9 hole matches. There were 1 hole wins for Jeff and Richard and also for Mike Gwyther and Kevin Spear. The Adrian Bragg /Keith Stimpson and Chris Glenny /Meurig Phillips partnerships both fought hard to gain half points but Pat Regan and Mike D’Angeli came up against the superb putting of Richard Ward and went down 3/1. Our thanks go to the Neath groundstaff who provided a pick-up to transport the bags and trollies from the 9th hole back to the clubhouse.

In the afternoon singles local man Kevin Spears led the way for the home team and he won well by 5/4. Jeff Thomas fought hard after going behind early on to come back and win on the last hole. Adrian Bragg showed tenacity to fight from two down with three to play to secure half a point. Half way through the afternoon most of the remaining matches were close and the overall result could have gone either way. Pat Regan and Keith Stimpson delivered two points winning 2/1 and 3/1 respectively. Mike Gwyther and Chris Glenny both showed their experience to record last hole victories and the battle was won.

Captain for the day Ed Morgan was naturally ecstatic with his team’s performance and this excellent win bodes well for the rest of the season. There were celebrations in Spain where Seniors Captain Ian Henderson cracked open a bottle of Champagne to toast a fine performance.
After two hard days of golf at Cardiff Golf Club playing in the South Wales Seniors Open the seniors team were more than a little tired, mentally and physically. With just a one-day break before the match against Gloucestershire, and not having the resilience of youth, the same sort of bone dry course proved too much in the morning foursomes with the County losing four and a half to a half. After a lunchtime team talk a determined 10 players set about making up the deficit and despite winning the afternoon singles six to four Gloucestershire’s head start proved too much. Good singles wins for Jeff Thomas, Adrian Bragg, Mike Gwyther, Pat Regan, Meurig Phillips and Ian Henderson, in an overall loss of 8.5 to 6.5. The team now head for Launceston to take on Cornwall in just a week’s time, hoping to be fresher after a longer break and determined to get back to winning ways.
In spite of the recent weather the Whitchurch course was in excellent condition &, as always, the club provided hospitality to all that was second to none. Our thanks for allowing use of the course so soon after the Silver Dragon.
