SWBGA Matchplay Championship

South Wales Boys report Newly-opened Raglan Park Golf Club provided the perfect setting for the 2025 South Wales Boys Championship as the firm and bouncy fairways proved a tricky test for the field. The 36-hole stroke play event was played on day one with Pyle and Kenfig’s William Pontin (153) pipping Rhydian Jones of Brynhill to the title thanks to a better last 18 holes. The two Glamorgan County players were closely followed by Paul Reid (Glamorganshire) and Matthew Lewis (Pennard) on a 158 total. 16 players made it through to the match play stages, with the above four players making up the semi final lineup In the first match Glamorgan County U18 captain Pontin beat his vice captain Matthew Lewis 2+1 with Paul Reid beating Rhydian Jones 3+2. The final between Reid and Pontin turned into an exciting game of matchplay with both players jostling to take control of the match. Reid enjoyed the best of the front nine taking a 1 hole advantage with him into the turn, but it was Pontin who was able to manage both his game and the final stages to perfection hitting three birdies in a row on holes 15,16 and 17 to seal a 3+1 win. For Pontin is was a strokeplay and matchplay double victory.
