The Glamorgan County Golf Union was founded on March 8th 1928 at the Royal Hotel in Cardiff. The first Chairman was Hubert J Edmunds of Whitchurch golf club and the first secretary was R. Cope Lewis of Radyr. The intention was to enhance the quality of golf in Wales by arranging more tournaments as a stepping stone to international prominence for outstanding players. Royal Porthcawl was designated as the venue for the first championship meeting on Saturday June 9th. The meeting was an extraordinary success in every way with Mr. GS Emery becoming the first County Champion and Glamorganshire the first holders of the County Club Championship.
Now 97 years later the GCGU organises competitions, Championships and Orders of Merit at every age level from Under 10’s to Seniors golf. We have a Juniors Winter coaching programme which involves over 100 junior golfers and includes swing and short game coaching as well as strength and conditioning instruction and mind set advice. We also have an elite squad coaching programme with national coach Neil Matthews which is well underway for 2025.
There are Junior and Men’s leagues and in Men’s golf we have the KO Cup and this year for the first time we will be holding H’cap competition in singles and 4-BBB events. Other H’cap events include a Stableford competition in the Seniors Championship and East and West Qualifiers for club teams in the Welsh Team H’cap Championship.
In Team golf we have U12,U14,U16 and U18 teams in Junior golf , County and Wessex League teams in Men’s golf and Channel League and South Wales League teams in Seniors’ golf . Glamorgan teams play in approximately 50 matches and competitions every year and we have a team of dedicated managers who run our teams in a very professional manner.
We are grateful to our 41 affiliated clubs who host these fixtures and also run Scratch tournaments which together with the County Championship make up our Order of Merit. All members of our affiliated clubs can by arrangement play other courses, not just in Glamorgan but also in Gwent and Dyfed, at a reduced fee (the County card rate). After consultation with our clubs we have decided to desist with the physical county card and move to a digital alternative. For this season we would ask members and clubs to use and accept info on apps such as Wales Golf or Club V1 as evidence of club membership.
Above all our stated aim is to promote and support amateur golf in Glamorgan.
Chairman Mike Evans
